- Creature learns to define senses from surrounding nature. loves nature, and wishes to express it, but scares himself when he tries.
- Fire brings warmpth and heat - learning like an early caveman

- sees & hears an old man play an instrument; 'It was a lovely sight, even to me, poor wretch who had never beheld aught beautiful before' shows that beauty is intrinsic to him, and he acknowledges his wretched state compaired to the human form
